OUR HISTORY
Our families have a history of five generations of vine growers and winemakers. Many of the current vineyards and the old cellar date back to their times.
In a grandfathers time the wines were sold by the glass to patrons of Mettola’s tavern or in demijohns, and bottled by the Bera family.
Wine was one of the main staples of those who worked the fields. They needed something nutritious that would alleviate the fatigue of manual work both in the cellar and in the vineyard.
In the 1960s, Italy's transformation from an agrarian society (50% of the active population employed in agriculture) to an industrial one (only 3% of farmers) emptied the Italian countryside.
Mettola has seen many of their family members leave their rural lifestyle for the relative comfort and convenience of life in the city.
The Bera family, however, has resisted the siren chants of industrialization and maintains its livelihood from the centuries old family vineyards, as it continues to do so in present day.
The current generation of Bera and Mettola, who currently own the winery, believes more than ever in living and providing healthy and respectful viticulture and winemaking.
